Gottfried Hirnschall

Dr Gottfried Hirnschall has focused throughout his career on the inclusion of vulnerable and stigmatized groups in national programme responses.

Dr Hirnschall holds an MD from the University of Vienna and a Master of Public Health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Until 2019, Dr Hirnschall directed the World Health Organization’s HIV/AIDS Department and Global Hepatitis Programme. In those roles, he led the organization’s work in strategy and advocacy, establishing cutting-edge normative policies, and supporting countries to scale up national responses to HIV and viral hepatitis.

From 2005 to 2008, Dr Hirnschall directed the Pan American Health Organization’s Caribbean HIV office, where he frequently had the opportunity to engage and work with Robert Carr.
