Tian Johnson

Tian joined the ISC as Civil Society Observer in August 2019. An African gender non-conforming activist, Tian has worked for two decades to strengthen community-based and national networks and programs in Africa, with a focus on women’s rights, gender equity, education for girls, advancement of sexual health and rights, increasing access to new HIV prevention technologies, prevention of and response to gender based violence, creating and sustaining networks of people with HIV and support for survivors of sexual assault.

Tian is the founder and lead strategist of the African Alliance for HIV Prevention, a member and convener of the Vaccine Advocacy Resource Group and a member of the Strategic Advisory Group for the Coalition to Accelerate and Support Prevention Research (CASPR). Tian’s recent work also includes: leading an evaluation of Global Fund-supported HIV testing services in South Africa; the development of rights-focused content for South Africa’s national plan on HIV, TB and STIs; a review of comprehensive sexuality education models in 12 African countries; management of the SRHR portfolio of a gender justice network; an analysis of gender-based violence monitoring and mitigation amongst sex workers in Sub-Saharan Africa; and an analysis of women’s access to paralegal services in the context of HIV and gender-based violence in the same region.
